Description: Das Projekt "Mesosphärische Dynamik, Energie und Chemie (MEDEC)" wird vom Umweltbundesamt gefördert und von Max-Planck-Institut für Meteorologie durchgeführt. The general purposes of MEDEC are to improve our understanding of the relations between dynamics, energetics and chemistry in the mesosphere, to evaluate the importance of these processes on the global atmosphere, and to assess the response of the mesosphere to natural and anthropogenic perturbations. The study will make use of space observations as well as of the most advanced models of the middle atmosphere. MEDEC is a consortium of several German institutions: Max Planck Institute for Meteorology in Hamburg, University of Wuppertal, Leibnitz Institute for Atmospheric Physics in Kuehlungsborn, University of Leipzig, and the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics in Munich. The consortium will focus on: Evaluation of chemical budgets in the mesosphere; Improvement of the formulation of radiative transfer in the middle atmosphere under non LTE conditions; Interactions between gravity waves and large scale waves in the mesosphere; Wave-zonal mean flow interactions based on space observations; Coupling between different middle atmospheric layers though the 2-day wave within the 11 year solar cycle; Critical evaluation of models based on available observation.
