HTR-N - High-Temperature Reactor Physics and Fuel Cycle Studies

Description: The HTR-N proposal is part of a European project on the development of HTR technology, which includes five other proposals: 'HTR-F, HTR-S, HTR-M, HTR-E and HTR-C', with the aim of giving more cohesion to the common programme. Links to these programmes are indicated on the main key issues only. The proposal represents the first phase of more extended R und D activities in the field of nuclear and thermal-hydraulic core physics and waste/fuel cycle studies. The main goals of the HTR-N study are: HTR core physics method validation and improvement. Identification of additional needs for nuclear data. Analysis of innovative core designs and Fuel Cycles for improved actinide burning capabilities, passive safety features (no catastrophic release of radioactivity), competitive power sizes and minimal generation of waste, . Assessment and treatment of HTR-specific waste . Long-term disposal characteristics of coated particle fuel. All these subjects will be analysed in five working packages. The responsibility for working package 2: Identification of additional needs for nuclear data lies by IKE. Furthermore, IKE contributes to working package 3: Analysis of innovative core designs and Fuel Cycles. 10 Partners of 5 countries are involved into the study. The coordinator is Dr. von Lensa of the Research Center Juelich.
