Description: Das Projekt "Development and introduction of integrated weed management methods for a highly productive and ecologically stable agriculture of the forest-steppe zone of the Ukraine" wird vom Umweltbundesamt gefördert und von Universität Hohenheim, Fakultät III Agrarwissenschaften I, Institut für Phytomedizin durchgeführt. General Information: The aim of this project is to develop and introduce knowledge based methods for Integrated Weed Management in the forest- steppe zone of the Ukraine. In the forest-steppe zone, where the main agricultural areas of the Ukraine are located, increasing weed infestations of crops are a main problem in agriculture and the country's economy. Average yield losses due to weeds are estimated to 24-28 per cent - During the course of the 2 years project the main factors of an Integrated Weed Management concept will be elaborated for the specific situation of the region. The research activities will include: establishment of a data base of weed infestation and weed flora in the main crops; analysis of the presently practised cropping systems with regard to weed infestation; investigations into the population biology and dynamics of important weed species; investigations into the problem of herbicide resistance in weeds; herbicide persistence in soil and contamination of surface waters with herbicides; investigation of the possibilities in reducing herbicide rates. The project will result in the development and introduction of Integrated Weed Management methods and contribute to an efficient and environmental safe agriculture. At the end of this project a good basis will exist for the institutions and the young scientists engaged, to further develop rational weed control concepts. Prime Contractor: University of Hohenheim, Institute of Phytomedicine, Department of Weed Science; Stuttgart; Germany.
