Title: Data analysis and numerical simulations for investigating Antarctic ice-shelf/ice-stream systems
Description: The Antarctic ice shelves together with their inflowing ice streams and glaciers are of great importance for the dynamics of the entire Antarctic ice sheet because they drain approximately 90 percent of the coastward mass flux of the inland ice. We plan to conduct detailed numerical simulations with the model FESSACODE of the dynamics of six typical Antarctic ice shelves which differ in size and type. For these simulations, it is required to pot together accurate data-sets for the ice thickness, the ice velocity, the grounding line and the surface temperature as inputs and for validating computed ice-flow fields. We will investigate the sensitivity of the ice flow to the ice thickness, the inflow velocity, the position and extent of ice rises and rumples, the surface temperature and the presence of crevassed areas. Further, prognostic simulations will be carried out in order to model the behaviour of the Antarctic ice shelves over the next decades and centuries in a warming environment. By coupling FESSACODE to the ice-sheet model SICOPOLIS, the reaction of the inland ice to possible changes of the ice shelves will also be investigated.
