ReFlex: Replicability Concept for Flexible Smart Grids, Wüstenrot Germany

Das Projekt "ReFlex: Replicability Concept for Flexible Smart Grids, Wüstenrot Germany" wird/wurde ausgeführt durch: Gemeinde Wüstenrot.Introduction: By 2020, the community Wuestenrot wants to cover its energy needs through the utilization of renewable energy sources, such as biomass, solar energy, wind power and geothermal energy, within the town area of 3000 hectares. In order to elaborate a practicable scheme for realizing this idea in a 'real' community and to develop a roadmap for implementation, the project 'EnVisaGe' under the leadership of the Stuttgart University of Applied Sciences (HFT Stuttgart) was initiated. Accompanying particular demonstration projects are a) the implementation of a plus-energy district with 16 houses connected to a low exergy grid for heating and cooling, b) a biomass district heating grid with integrated solar thermal plants. Project goal: The aim of the project is to develop a durable roadmap for the energy self-sufficient and energy-plus community of Wüstenrot. The roadmap shall be incorporated in an energy usage plan for the community, that shall be implemented by 2020 and brings Wüstenrot in an energy-plus status on the ecobalance sheet. A main feature within the EnVisaGe project is the implementation of a 14,703-m2 energy-plus model district called 'Vordere Viehweide'. It consists of 16 residential houses, supplied by a cold local heating network connected to a large geothermal ('agrothermal') collector. Here PV systems for generating electricity are combined with decentralised heat pumps and thermal storage systems for providing domestic hot water as well as with batteries for storing electricity. Another demonstration project is a district heating grid fed by biomass and solar thermal energy in the neighbourhood 'Weihenbronn'. It's based on a formerly oil-fired grid for the town hall and was extended to an adjacent residential area.

International Surface Ocean - Lower Atmosphere Study (SOLAS)

Das Projekt "International Surface Ocean - Lower Atmosphere Study (SOLAS)" wird/wurde ausgeführt durch: Helmholtz-Zentrum für Ozeanforschung Kiel (GEOMAR), Forschungsbereich 2: Marine Biogeochemie, Forschungseinheit Chemische Ozeanographie.Since 2004, the International Surface Ocean - Lower Atmosphere Study (SOLAS) project is an international research initiative aiming to understand the key biogeochemical-physical interactions and feedbacks between the ocean and atmosphere. Achievement of this goal is important to understand and quantify the role that ocean-atmosphere interactions play in the regulation of climate and global change. SOLAS celebrated its 10 year anniversary in 2014. In the first decade, the SOLAS community has accomplished a great deal towards the goals of the original Science Plan & Implementation Strategy and Mid-term Strategy (Law et al. 2013) as highlighted by the open access synthesis book on 'Ocean Atmosphere Interactions of Gases and Particles' edited by Liss and Johnson and the synthesis article in Anthropocene from Brévière et al. 2015. However there are still major challenges ahead that require coordinated research by ocean and atmospheric scientists. With this in mind, in 2013, SOLAS has started an effort to define research themes of importance for SOLAS research over the next decade. These themes form the basis of a new science plan for the next phase of SOLAS 2015-2025. SOLAS being a bottom-up organisation, a process in which community consultation play a central role was adopted. After two sets of reviews by our four sponsors (SCOR, Future Earth, WCRP and iCACGP), the SOLAS 2015-2025 Science Plan and Organisation (SPO) was officially approved.

Northern Eurasia Earth Science Partnership Initiative (NEESPI)

Das Projekt "Northern Eurasia Earth Science Partnership Initiative (NEESPI)" wird/wurde ausgeführt durch: Max-Planck-Institut für Biogeochemie. The Northern Eurasia Earth Science Partnership Initiative, or NEESPI, is a currently active, yet strategically evolving program of internationally-supported Earth systems science research, which has as its foci issues in northern Eurasia that are relevant to regional and Global scientific and decision-making communities (see NEESPI Mission Statement). This part of the globe is undergoing significant changes - particularly those changes associated with a rapidly warming climate in this region and with important changes in governmental structures since the early 1990s and their associated influences on land use and the environment across this broad expanse. How this carbon-rich, cold region component of the Earth system functions as a regional entity and interacts with and feeds back to the greater Global system is to a large extent unknown. Thus, the capability to predict future changes that may be expected to occur within this region and the consequences of those changes with any acceptable accuracy is currently uncertain. One of the reasons for this lack of regional Earth system understanding is the relative paucity of well-coordinated, multidisciplinary and integrating studies of the critical physical and biological systems. By establishing a large-scale, multidisciplinary program of funded research, NEESPI is aimed at developing an enhanced understanding of the interactions between the ecosystem, atmosphere, and human dynamics in northern Eurasia. Specifically, the NEESPI strives to understand how the land ecosystems and continental water dynamics in northern Eurasia interact with and alter the climatic system, biosphere, atmosphere, and hydrosphere of the Earth. The contemporaneous changes in climate and land use are impacting the biological, chemical, and physical functions of the northern Eurasia, but little data and fewer models are available that can be used to understand the current status of this expansive regional system, much less the influence of the northern Eurasia region on the Global climate. NEESPI seeks to secure the necessary financial and related institutional support from an international cadre of sponsors for developing a viable understanding of the functioning of northern Eurasia and the impacts of extant changes on the regional and Earth systems. Many types of ground and integrative (e.g., satellite; GIS) data will be needed and many models must be applied, adapted or developed for properly understanding the functioning of this cold and diverse regional system. Mechanisms for obtaining the requisite data sets and models and sharing them among the participating scientists are essential and require international and active governmental participation.

Combating environmental pollution through internationalisation of education in Germany and India (COMPOLL)

Das Projekt "Combating environmental pollution through internationalisation of education in Germany and India (COMPOLL)" wird/wurde gefördert durch: Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst. Es wird/wurde ausgeführt durch: Technische Universität Dresden, Institut für Leichtbau und Kunststofftechnik (ILK).In the light of the constantly increasing human population, a minimisation of the impact of mankind's actions on the environment becomes a vital issue. Especially the noise, air or water pollution as well as waste management have become one of the greatest global challenges that humans ever faced. The present project aims at bundling the existing contacts and activities and putting them at the service of increasing pollution awareness, e. g., by means of plastic waste reduction and recycling as well as return to design solutions allowing repair and overhaul. Specifically, the intensification of initiatives for environment protection by increasing the pollution awareness among students, scholars and company employers is aimed at. Such target audience is expected to lead the tomorrow's pro-environment initiatives on administration level (students), animate, analyse and intensify the anti-pollution measures of the local communities as well as in actual research topics (scholars) and change of research and development direction of industry in order to maintain profits in changing society (companies).

Das Projekt "H2020-EU.3.5. - Societal Challenges - Climate action, Environment, Resource Efficiency and Raw Materials - (H2020-EU.3.5. - Gesellschaftliche Herausforderungen - Klimaschutz, Umwelt, Ressourceneffizienz und Rohstoffe), Assessment of Cross(X)-sectoral climate Impacts and pathways for Sustainable transformation (AXIS)" wird/wurde gefördert durch: Kommission der Europäischen Gemeinschaften Brüssel. Es wird/wurde ausgeführt durch: Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt e.V..The AXIS consortium is set up to enhance integration of an array of research disciplines connected to climate research around the common goal to enhance the assessment of potential impacts of climate change on the bio-physical systems and human society. To this end AXIS plans to launch and implement a single transnational call - funded by 11 European research funders. Through an open process AXIS has developed three topics for this call. Each topic is intended to enhance collaboration across typical community borders: between different sectoral views of climate impacts as well as between bio-physical climate impacts and socio-economic effects. For all topics stakeholder engagement is given a high relevance in the call, thus representing another dimension of interaction across boundaries: interaction of the science community with end-users (stakeholders) of the created knowledge (transdisciplinarity). The three anticipated research areas (topics) are: (1) Cross-sectoral and cross-scale climate change impact assessments; (2) Integration of biophysical climate change impacts estimates with economic models; (3) Developing pathways to achieve the long-term objectives of the Paris Agreement, taking into account interactions with SDGs closely linked to SDG 13 ('climate action'). The AXIS consortium is deeply embedded in JPI Climate and aims to implement elements of its Strategic Research & Innovation Agenda. JPI Climate and the ERA-NET promoting Climate Services ERA4CS include a number of additional activities. Therefore within this proposal no addition activities are planned. Close partnership of the AXIS consortium and JPI Climate with other key international initiatives (Belmont Forum, GFCS, Future Earth, UN PROVIA, Copernicus) will be sought in order to continue to work against fragmentation of disciplines and geographies in climate science. In this respect a close connection with the parallel CSA proposal SINCERE is planned.
