Seawater carbonate chemistry and behavioural trait expression of polar invertebrates

Here, we examine the ecosystem ramifications of changes in sediment-dwelling invertebrate bioturbation behaviour—a key process mediating nutrient cycling—associated with nearfuture environmental conditions (+ 1.5 °C, 550 ppm [pCO2]) for species from polar regions experiencing rapid rates of climate change. This dataset is included in the OA-ICC data compilation maintained in the framework of the IAEA Ocean Acidification International Coordination Centre (see https://oa-icc.ipsl.fr). Original data were downloaded from Polar Data Centre (see Source) by the OA-ICC data curator. In order to allow full comparability with other ocean acidification data sets, the R package seacarb (Gattuso et al, 2024) was used to compute a complete and consistent set of carbonate system variables, as described by Nisumaa et al. (2010). In this dataset the original values were archived in addition with the recalculated parameters (see related PI). The date of carbonate chemistry calculation by seacarb is 2024-07-11.

Early modern text-based dataset of demography, economy, social and environmental crises from the Mulde River system, Germany

This dataset compiles historical socio-economic, demographic and hydrological records from between 1611 CE to 1800 CE to provide contextual information for primary-source data on salmon catches in the Mulde catchment and the German Elbe river system. Local economic conditions are represented by a historical series of market prices for "grain" (Korn, probably rye), selected because it offers the highest temporal density among the available grain-price records. The series was compiled from Kamprad's annals by Schellenberg and extended to 1841, with reporting intervals ranging from 0.2 to 16 years (mean approximately four years). Prices recorded in Thaler, Gulden, Groschen and Pfennig were standardised as decimal Gulden. Demographic conditions were reconstructed from annual baptism and burial records of St Mary's Church, which provide numbers of births and deaths for 1637–1841; earlier records were destroyed in the city fire of 1637. A deaths-to-births ratio was calculated as measure of excess mortality. Reports of city fires, food-supply crises and disease outbreaks were additionally extracted from local chronicles. Historical flood and drought events were compiled from published datasets and chronicles covering the Mulde sub-catchment, the German reaches of the Elbe and other Elbe tributaries. These records were collected to document socio-environmental conditions potentially relevant to the operation and maintenance of salmon-catching infrastructure and to longitudinal river connectivity.

Munition pile inventory in the German Baltic Sea, 2017 to 2024

The dataset is a spreadsheet of munition piles, their properties (e.g., number of objects, variability, burial state), and the parameters characterizing their environmental (e.g., munition compound concentrations and current velocity) and maritime (e.g., distance to various maritime uses and traffic density) surroundings in the German Baltic Sea. Data were collected over numerous cruises from 2017 to 2024. All munition piles in the dataset are located at Kolberger Heide (close to Kiel Fjord) or in the Lübeck Bay. The purpose of data acquisition was to understand the distribution and properties of dumped munitions in German waters as well as the hazards and risks they pose to maritime uses. Munition piles were annotated in multibeam echosounder data, assessed in detail in photomosaics, and analyzed using an array of geospatial analysis methods.

Saarländischer Friedwald

Im saarländischen Urwald - dem 1003 Hektar großen Areal zwischen Netzbach- und Steinbachtal wurde am 21. Januar 2005, der erste saarländische Friedwald eröffnet. Rund 60 Hektar des Urwaldes vor den Toren der Stadt werden künftig als Friedwald-Fläche genutzt. Das Friedwald-Konzept gibt es in Deutschland seit Mitte 2000. Die Bestattung in der Natur wird deutschlandweit von der FriedWald GmbH in Darmstadt angeboten. Gegenwärtig gibt es acht Friedwälder in Deutschland, weitere sind in Planung.

CO2 storage potential of the Middle Buntsandstein Subgroup - EEZ of the German North Sea

The CO2 storage potential of the Middle Buntsandstein Subgroup within the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of the German North Sea was analysed within the framework of the GEOSTOR-Project. A total of 71 potential storage sites were mapped based on existing 3D models, seismic and well data. Static CO2 capacities were calculated for each structure using Monte Carlo simulations with 10,000 iterations to account for uncertainties. All potential reservoirs were evaluated based on their static capacity, burial depth, top seal integrity and trap type. Analysis identified 38 potential storage sites with burial depths between 800 m and 4500 m, reservoir capacities (P50) above 5 Mt CO2 and suitable sealing units. The best storage conditions are expected on the West Schleswig Block where salt-controlled anticlines with moderate burial depths, large reservoir capacities and limited lateral flow barriers are the dominant trap types. Relatively poor storage conditions can be anticipated for small (P50 <5 Mt CO2), deeply buried (> 4500 m) and structurally complex potential storage sites in the Horn and Central Graben. Untersuchung und Beurteilung der Erdbestattungspraxis auf Friedhöfen in Deutschland hinsichtlich ihrer Auswirkungen auf Boden, Grundwasser und Atmosphäre in den ausgewählten Landschaften der Bundesrepublik Deutschland

Zielsetzung und Anlass des Vorhabens: Im Rahmen des Projektes sollten Informationen über Art und Umfang des Problems mit Friedhöfen in Deutschland gewonnen werden. Die Folgen einer Erdbestattung für Boden, Grundwasser und Atmosphäre werden seit vielen Jahrzehnten besonders vor dem Hintergrund der im Wasserhaushalts- und weiteren Umweltschutzgesetzen definierten Rahmenbedingungen hinterfragt. Bis heute liegt den Friedhofsplanern und -betreibern keine einheitliche, unter bodenkundlichen Gesichtspunkten nachvollziehbare Beurteilung und Bewertung (Umweltverträglichkeit) mit der Zielrichtung der Erarbeitung von Empfehlungen und Verordnungen für die Vor- und Nachsorge von Erdbestattungen vor. Fazit: Um praktikable Lösungen für Problemstandorte herbeizuführen, die einen gesicherten Betriebsablauf auf Friedhöfen gewährleisten und dem Vorsorgeaspekt des Umweltschutzes Rechnung tragen, ist es notwendig, künftig eingehende Feldforschungen an unterschiedlichen Friedhofsstandorten in Deutschland vorzunehmen. Nur so können gesicherte Aussagen über die Ursachen, die zu Verwesungsstörungen führen sowie Grundwassergefährdungsprognosen gemacht werden. Basierend auf den Untersuchungsergebnissen ließe sich eine Handhabung konzipieren, die bundesweit als Friedhofs-Manual vorgeschlagen werden und den kommunalen, gemeindlichen, kirchlichen und auch privaten Friedhofsträgern als Leitfaden für den Betriebsablauf dienen kann.
