Fish counts and species at and around artificially introduced tetrapod fields in the southern North Sea, 2023

With increasing global change, coastal protection measures are becoming increasingly important for preserving our coastal features and infrastructure. Coastal protection often comes in the form of artificial structures however, artificial structures can also appear as renewable energy projects, maritime infrastructure and aquaculture installations. The ecological effects of such structures on the natural surroundings remains largely unclear. 36 tetrapod structures (4-footed concrete breakwaters each weighing 2.8 t) in groups of six were added to the MarGate underwater experimental area to the north of Helgoland, in the Southern North Sea, in 2009 at 5 and 10 m water depth. The 5 m fields TN5 (North), TM5 (Middle) and TS5 (South) have been monitored monthly, since their introduction, with respect to the abundance, species composition and size of the associated biota community. By carrying out this monitoring project, we aim to study the long-term effects of artificial structures on the local biotic community in shallow coastal ecosystems. Line transect based visual fish census conducted by trained scientific divers is used to survey the fish communities in the vicinity of each tetrapod field. For this, four 20m long line transects are laid out permanently in the four cardinal directions, each marked at 0, 5, 10, 15 and 20 m distance to the tetrapod field. Data collection is communicated by the diver via voice communication of the surface and noted directly in the standardized protocol together with metadata on algae coverage other environmental parameters.

Further details regarding the sampling design can be found in the metadata section "Survey Design and Sampling Methodology". Survey Design and Sampling Methodology At each tetrapod field (TN5, TM5, and TS5), four permanent 20-meter transect lines were established in the cardinal directions (figure 1): North (N), East (O), South (S), and West (W). Each transect was marked at intervals of 0, 5, 10, 15, and 20 meters from the respective outer edge of the tetrapod field. At each of these five counting stations along the transects, fish were surveyed within a 2 m² area — 1 m² to the left and 1 m² to the right of the transect line — totaling 10 m² per transect and 40 m² per field. For each observation, the following data were recorded: • Species identity, • Total number of individuals (abundance), • Individual total length (in cm). This standardized method resulted in a total surveyed area of 120 m² per counting event: • 3 tetrapod fields × 4 transect lines × 5 stations × 2 m² per station = 120 m².

GovReg: Support to developing countries, 2020-present

This dataset provides data on how much financial, capacity building and technology support the EU Member States and other countries have either planned, committed, or provided to developing countries in relation to climate change mitigation or adaptation. The dataset holds further details on the provided support, e.g., the recipient of support, the financial instrument, the funding source, the concrete projects which benefited or the targeted sector. The Member States submit their data to the European Environment Agency (EEA) via the online platform Reportnet 3. Reporting is mandatory for EU Member States. Some information is only mandatory to report if the data is available. The data is then quality checked by DG CLIMA at the European Commission. DG CLIMA also performs aggregation of the data and combines them with other data sources (European Investment Bank, European Commission). This data is being collected under Article 19 of the Governance Regulation 2018/1999. The Regulation aims to help the EU meet its 2030 climate and energy targets by setting common rules for planning, reporting and monitoring. The Regulation also ensures that EU planning and reporting are synchronised with the ambition cycles under the Paris Agreement. Within the data download, there is an additional document providing detailed statistical metadata information on this dataset.

Correctly assessing the performance and threats of microorganisms in agricultural soils – identifying meaningful endpoints under field-relevant pesticide, biocide and pharmaceutical exposure

The aim of the MICROSOIL project was to identify meaningful endpoints for assessing the effects of plant protection products, veterinary pharmaceuticals and biocides on microorganisms in agricultural soils. The current risk assessment for plant protection products (PPPs) considers the effects of PPPs on nitrogen turnover by microorganisms in test soils according to the OECD 216 testguideline. However, this laboratory test does not cover all risks to microorganisms caused by PPPs. Within this project, five alternative methods to assess the effects of chemicals on the soil microbial community were identified, based on a literature review and a scoring system . To compare the sensitivity of these methods to chemicals, laboratory tests were carried out with three soils and six test substances, each.Based on the MICROSOIL results, it is recommended to add an additional test on bacterial function (ISO 20130, enzymatic activity) and a structural test on the effects on mycorrhizal fungi (ISO 10832) to the first tier risk assessment of chemicals. A fingerprinting method to assess the impact on community structure is also recommended but needs to be further elaborated. The results of this project also show that the current risk assessment for veterinary pharmaceuticals may not cover the development of antibiotic resistance in environmentally relevant soil bacteria. This project also investigated the degradation performance of microorganisms after multiple applications of chemicals. Multiple applications of the same substance as well as the presence of another substance in the soil had both positive and negative effects on the degradation rate of the test substances. The results presented here underline the need to update the risk assessment framework for soil organisms, exposed to chemicals and provide concrete suggestions for a new risk assessment scheme.
