The Urban Sprawl datasets shows the physically expanding urban areas - the spatial arrangement of built-up areas and their utilization. The European Environment Agency (EEA) has described sprawl as the physical pattern of low-density expansion of large urban areas, under market conditions, mainly into the surrounding agricultural areas. Sprawl is the leading edge of urban growth and implies little planning control of land subdivision urban sprawl metrics .

Das Projekt "Bewertung von Bodenschutzmaßnahmen (EUSOIL)" wird vom Umweltbundesamt gefördert und von Ecologic, Institut für Internationale und Europäische Umweltpolitik durchgeführt. Eine der zentralen Säulen der thematischen Strategie für den Bodenschutz ist die Einbeziehung des Bodenschutzes in die Formulierung und Durchführung politischer Maßnahmen der Mitgliedstaaten und der Gemeinschaft. Die Gemeinschaftspolitik für Bereiche wie unter anderem Landwirtschaft, Regionalentwicklung, Verkehr und Forschung, hat signifikante Auswirkungen auf den Boden. Seit Verabschiedung der Mitteilung 'Hin zu einer spezifischen Bodenschutzstrategie' im Jahr 2002 wurde danach gestrebt, dass aktuelle umweltpolitische Maßnahmen in den Bereichen Abfall, Wasser, Luft, Klimaveränderung, Chemikalien, Hochwasserschutz, biologische Vielfalt und Umwelthaftung zu einer Verbesserung des Bodenschutzes beitragen. Wenn die Ziele dieser Strategie erreicht werden sollen, muss der Bodenschutz stärker in andere politische Bereiche integriert werden. Um das zu erreichen, sieht die thematische Bodenschutzstrategie einige Aktivitäten zur Bewertung der in den Mitgliedstaaten bereits ergriffenen oder geplanten Maßnahmen vor, um auf diese Weise die aktuelle Einbeziehung der Ziele des Bodenschutzes in bestimmten Bereichen der europäischen Politik und deren Beitrag zum Bodenschutz auszuwerten. Darüber hinaus werden mögliche Synergieeffekte zwischen diesen Maßnahmen einerseits und Maßnahmen zum Schutz und zur nachhaltigen Nutzung des Bodens andererseits ausgewertet.
