Wald kann bei Vorliegen bestimmter Voraussetzungen von Amts wegen oder auf Antrag durch Erlass einer Verordnung der obersten Forstbehörde zu Schutzwald nach § 12 LWaldG erklärt werden. Schutzwald nach §12 LWaldG ist Wald, der zur Abwehr von Gefahren, erheblichen Nachteilen oder erheblichen Belästigungen für die Allgemeinheit, zur Durchführung von Forschungen sowie zur Erhaltung schutzwürdiger Biotope, insbesondere Naturwälder, notwendig ist. WF 8200 Erholungswald mit Rechtsbindung nach §12 LWaldG

Wald in Ballungsräumen, in der Nähe von Städten sowie größeren Siedlungen als Teil von Gemeinden und in Erholungsgebieten und Kurorten, der zum Zwecke der Erholung besonders zu schützen, zu pflegen und zu gestalten ist, kann gemäß §12 Abs. 5 LWaldG per Rechtsverordnung zu Erholungswald als geschütztes Waldgebiet erklärt werden.
