The hidden dynamics of Lake Baikal - Prolongation

This proposal seeks a contribution of one year for finalizing the project 'The hidden dynamics of Lake Baikal' (Grant IZLRZ2-128306). The original project was funded by SNSF as a joint research project with Russia in the framework of the Scientific & Technological Cooperation Programme Switzerland-Russia. The present proposal seeks financing for the scientific part of the project conducted by Eawag, in order to allow the PhD student on the project, Chrysanthi Tsimitri, to finish her PhD. The major aim of this project is an in-depth analysis of the temperature and current time series collected between 2000 and 2012 with moorings installed in Lake Baikal. The analysis includes: (i) An assessment of coastal downwelling events along the steep north-western shore of the South Basin and their dependence on external forcing (ii) An evaluation of the importance of the near-inertial motions - which are a dominant part of the signal in most of the observed time series - for the mixing processes in Lake Baikal as well as their correlation to external forcing (iii) An assessment of the sensitivity of the mixing processes to climate warming and a quantification of the lake-internal heat fluxes and their dependence on external forcing. During the first two project years, the research activities of the original proposal have been successfully pursued. Besides the ongoing collaboration with the Russian partners, additional collaborations were initiated with research groups from the Helmholtz-Zentrum in Geesthacht and the University of Trento. The former provided a downscaled wind field for the surface of Lake Baikal that can be used to correlate mooring observations with wind events. The latter work on 1-dimensional and 3-dimensional modelling of hydrodynamic processes in Lake Baikal. However, the duration of the funding was limited to 2.5 years, and a prolongation in the same funding channel is not possible. Such a short duration is not sufficient to finish the PhD thesis, and we therefore seek for a prolongation of the salary for the PhD student by one year. All the other costs related to the project are covered by the finances of the original proposal.
