Benthic macrofauna were sampled on expedition HE625 of the R/V Heincke in July 2023 at 50 stations spread evenly over the muddy sediment region in southeast of the island of Helgoland (southeastern North Sea). At each station, two replicate samples were taken with a van Veen grab with a sampling area of 0.1 m² and a penetration depth of 10 cm. The first sample was sieved through a 1000 µm mesh to retain macrofauna, and species were determined to the lowest taxonomic level. The WoRMS LSIDs (AphiaID) was provided to identify the scientific name of the species. For each taxon, the total wet weight was measured with a precision of 0.001 g. The dataset comprises counted abundance and biomass records for 171 infaunal taxa.
This dataset contains morphological stomach content data of the demersal flatfish Buglossidium luteum (solenette) collected at multiple sampling stations in the German Bight. At each station, B. luteum individuals were sampled during daytime using an epibenthic dredge (1 m width, 1 cm mesh size) towed for 5 minutes. Immediately after capture, fish were individually sealed in storage bags and frozen at −80 °C to preserve gut contents. In the laboratory, specimens were transferred to freezers and stored at −28 °C until further processing. Selected fish were defrosted and stomachs were removed and weighed. All prey items were sorted and identified to the lowest possible taxonomic level using a stereomicroscope (Leica MZ12), based on regional identification keys, taxonomic catalogues, expert consultation, and comparisons with fresh reference material. Occasionally, digestion and mastication of individuals resulted in the loss of diagnostic features. In those cases, individuals were determined at a higher taxonomic level. All taxa were quantified in terms of abundance and biomass (wet mass; measured to 0.0001g) within the stomachs, and stored in 70% ethanol. Following analysis, prey items were preserved in 70% ethanol. The stomach content dataset was curated by excluding foraminifera, nematodes, and parasites.
In preparation for a forthcoming monitoring project, a shallow subtidal area in the northern Wadden Sea was studied for macrozoobenthos >1 mm sieve size. Using a Reineck-type box-corer of 0.02 m² surface area, abundance and specific composition were evaluated from a sampling grid of 21 positions with two replicates each. Temporarily, sampling was repeated 9 times. Analyses of spatial and temporal variability revealed that within-site variability was far lower than between-site variability. As a consequence, the later monitoring project was based on a higher number of study sites at the cost of within-site replication.
The long-term ecological research benthic monitoring comprises four representative permanent stations (SSd, Slt, FSd and WB) that have been sampled countinuously since 1969. The four stations are representative for the different benthic communities in the German Bight. Inter-annual variability and possible long-term trends were analysed based on spring-time samples since 1969. Earlier datasets have been published in the publication series https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.667646. Macrozoobenthos of soft-bottom benthic community was collected by van-Veen grabs. This dataset contains the continuation of this time series with the samples collected in spring between 2016 and 2019 each year in the North Sea, German Bight. Data for each campaign comprise four stations in the German Bight, sampled by grab samples (infauna). Biodiversity data of species include abundance (count data) and biomass (wet mass, g) per sample.

The long-term ecological research benthic monitoring comprises four representative permanent stations (SSd, Slt, FSd and WB) that have been sampled continuously in spring since 1969. The four stations are representative for the different benthic communities in the German Bight. Inter-annual variability and possible long-term trends were analysed based on spring-time samples since 1969. Macrozoobenthos of soft-bottom benthic community was collected by van-Veen grabs. The data is also available in a PostgreSQL-based data warehouse that can be accessed and queried through an open-access frontend web service at https://critterbase.awi.de/benosis by searching for the data sets "LTER_Benthos". Earlier datasets covering the years 1969-2000 have been published in the publication series https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.667646.
In parallel to an ongoing time series in the subtidal of List Reede, 12 fixed sites were sampled in the adjoining intertidal area between September 2003 and June 2012. Analyses comprised abundances and species composition of macrozoobenthos (sieve size 1 mm) and granulometric sediment composition. This dataset contains the results from two sampling dates in 2003.
