Determination of log KOC values according to OECD TG 106

The report presents a study on the environmental behaviour of three benzotriazoles – 1H-benzotriazole (CAS 95-14-7), 4-methylbenzotriazole (CAS 29878-31-7), and 5-methylbenzotriazole (CAS 136-85-6) – investigated in adsorption and desorption experiments with five different soils. As part of the study, the organic carbon-normalized adsorption coefficients (Koc values) were determined. Koc describes the relative distribution of a substance between soil and water, normalized to the fraction of organic carbon in the soil. Under the CLP Regulation, Koc is a key parameter for evaluating the mobility of substances in the aquatic environment, and thus provides an essential basis for environmental hazard classification. The results of this study deliver important data for assessing the three benzotriazoles with respect to their classification in the regulatory hazard categories PMT (persistent, mobile, toxic) and vPvM (very persistent, very mobile).

Rheological tests of viscous material mixtures used as lithosphere analogues

This dataset contains rheological and density measurements of viscous material mixtures used to simulate the lithosphere in analogue modeling of tectonic processes. Simulating lithospheric deformation occurring in nature over geological time scales requires appropriately scaled materials for the laboratory experiments. Here, we characterize viscous materials that can exhibit Newtonian and/or non-Newtonian behavior depending on the applied strain rate. We conducted rotational tests in controlled shear rate mode (i.e., shear rate was increased while keeping the temperature constant) and temperature ramp tests (i.e., temperature was varied while keeping temperature constant) on eight different materials, including pure Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), pure plastiline (Hartum Color Plaxtin Soft), and mixtures of these materials with fillers (iron powder and/or silicone oil). This publication results from work conducted under the transnational access/national open access action at the Laboratory of Experimental Tectonics of the University Roma Tre supported by WP3 ILGE - MEET project, PNRR - EU Next Generation Europe program, MUR grant number D53C22001400005.

REACH: Guidance and Methods for the Identification and Assessment of PMT/vPvM Substances

Protection of drinking water resources from PMT/vPvM substances: Revised guidance for REACH registrants on the identification of these substances of very high concern (SVHC). Only 1.9 % of the unique chemical structures in the REACH registration database fall in the new CLP hazard classes PMT and vPvM. However, for a total of 64 % no final assessment was achieved, either due to lack of test data (41 %) or due to ambiguous assessment (23 %). These guidance and methods can be used immediately by REACH registrants to ensure the safety of their substances, to close data gaps and, if necessary, to use safer alternatives, or to implement risk mitigation measures (RMMs). PMT/vPvM assessment of REACH registered Substances Detected in Wastewater Treatment Plant Effluent, Freshwater Resources and Drinking Water

A broad literature review (55 studies published between 2000 and 2019) now shows that 639 chemicals are already known as contaminants in river bank filtrate (114 substances), groundwater (338 substances), raw water (212 substances) or drinking water (385 substances). The literature review carried out by the German Environment Agency reveals: Every second substance that contaminates our drinking water resources is registered under REACH, of which 24 % fall in the new CLP hazard classes PMT and vPvM. Considering only the raw water, the proportion even rises to 32 %. In the REACH registration database, the proportion of PMT/vPvM substances based on CLP criteria is only 1.9 %. Prioritised PMT/vPvM substances in the REACH registration database

Die höchste Prioritätskategorie A umfasst 173 PMT/vPvM-Stoffe.
