Use cases from the German NTSPortal on the systematic use of high-resolution mass spectrometry non-target screening data in environmental monitoring and chemicals management

Background Society aims for a pollutant-free environment, reflected in initiatives under the European Green Deal, which seek to reduce hazardous substances and promote safe, sustainable chemical use. Comprehensive exposure data are needed to identify sources, understand mixtures and eliminate sources of chemical pollution. High-resolution mass spectrometry non-target screening (HRMS NTS) is increasingly used in environmental regulatory context to chemically characterise the environment as completely as possible and retrospectively screen for known and emerging substances. Results This study provides use cases for monitoring and chemicals management with data from the German NTSPortal, a database and visualisation tool for HRMS NTS data from surface water and suspended particulate matter of major German rivers. Its internal spectral library enables substance identification comparable to standardised target analysis, supporting regulatory acceptance of HRMS NTS data for prioritisation and mixture assessment. To demonstrate its potential to research and regulation, we characterised the spatial and temporal distribution of riverine chemical mixtures and present selected use cases relevant to EU environmental, emission, and chemical legislation. Despite pronounced spatial variability, mixture composition based on presence–absence data remained stable over time, with 855 of 1721 substances detected at least once and 247 occurring ubiquitously. Declining trends for regulated substances such as carbendazim and climbazole illustrate the effectiveness of regulatory measures. Overall, the results showed that NTS data repositories can help overcome fragmented exposure information and enable more consistent use of monitoring data across policy areas, including evaluation of the revised Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive and One Health concepts. Conclusions Data from the German NTSPortal enabled a multi-matrix and temporal characterisation of riverine chemical mixtures, revealing both stable mixture compositions over time and persistent, catchment-specific substances. These data facilitated high-resolution mixture assessments across space and time, alongside trend analyses that meet regulatory needs in environmental monitoring and chemical risk assessment. Further temporal, spatial, chemical and matrix-spanning expansion of HRMS NTS repositories will enhance their value for environmental monitoring programmes. Strengthening interoperability, implementing FAIR data principles, and developing advanced tools for prioritisation, quantification and toxicity prediction, including AI-based approaches, will be crucial to fully realise the regulatory potential of NTS portals in the future. © The Author(s) 2026.

Rheological tests of viscous material mixtures used as lithosphere analogues

This dataset contains rheological and density measurements of viscous material mixtures used to simulate the lithosphere in analogue modeling of tectonic processes. Simulating lithospheric deformation occurring in nature over geological time scales requires appropriately scaled materials for the laboratory experiments. Here, we characterize viscous materials that can exhibit Newtonian and/or non-Newtonian behavior depending on the applied strain rate. We conducted rotational tests in controlled shear rate mode (i.e., shear rate was increased while keeping the temperature constant) and temperature ramp tests (i.e., temperature was varied while keeping temperature constant) on eight different materials, including pure Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), pure plastiline (Hartum Color Plaxtin Soft), and mixtures of these materials with fillers (iron powder and/or silicone oil). ELFIN-L Level 1 PRM (Electron Losses and Fields INvestigation on board the Lomonosov satellite, Pierce-Rowe Magnetometer data)

The objective of the Lomonosov satellite development concerns the studies of the ultra-high energy cosmic rays and fast processes in optic, X-ray and gamma-ranges which occur in the upper layers of the Earth's atmosphere and in the Universe. This dataset consists of Pierce-Rowe Magnetometer data (PRM) of the ELFIN-L instrument which has been described in Shprits et al. (2018). The data is available from May to November 2016.

Fortentwicklung der Verordnung (EU) Nr. 2016/1628 für Mobile Maschinen und Geräte - NRMM (Non Road Mobile Machinery)

Non Road Mobile Machinery (NRMM), wie z.B. Baumaschinen, Traktoren oder Rasenmäher, sind eine der wesentlichen mobilen Quellen für Schadstoffemissionen. Sie emittieren deutschlandweit jährlich fast die gleiche Menge an Abgaspartikeln und ca. 15 % der Stickoxid Emissionen verglichen mit Straßenfahrzeugen, wie z.B. Autos oder Lkw. Neue NRMM-Motoren müssen aktuell die Abgasstufe V nach der EU-Verordnung 2016/1628 erfüllen. Die strengen Grenzwerte entsprechen in etwa denen der Euro VI für LKW. Die vorliegende Studie untersucht, ob NRMM auch im Realbetrieb geringe Emissionen aufweisen. Stufe V-Motoren der Kategorie 56 bis 560 Kilowatt Nennleistung, welche einen Großteil aller NRMM ausmachen, halten diese Grenzwerte unter normalen Arbeitsbedingungen ein. Leerlaufphasen und Kaltstarts, welche über 50 % der Gesamtemissionen ausmachen können, fließen jedoch in der aktuellen Verordnung nicht ausreichend mit ein. Eine zukünftige In-Service-Conformity-Gesetzgebung sollte dies berücksichtigen. Die Partikel- und Stickoxidgrenzwerte für Dieselmotoren bis 19 kW (bei Binnenschiffen bis 300 kW) entsprechen noch etwa dem Stand von Euro-IV-Lkw oder älter. Die Grenzwerte für kleinere Benzingeräte liegen weit hinter den aktuellen Anforderungen für Pkw oder Mopeds zurück. Eine Fortentwicklung der Gesetzgebung wird daher empfohlen. Diese sollte auch den Umstieg auf Nullemissionsantriebe, z.B. Elektrogeräte, zum Ziel haben und dieses, beispielsweise durch ambitionierte Emissionsgrenzwerte und eine Roadmap, unterstützen. Die Erkenntnisse der Studie stützen sich auf ein umfangreiches Daten-Set basierend auf Literatur, Telematiksystemen und eigenen Messungen mit portablen Emissionsmessgeräten (PEMS). Weiteren Forschungsbedarf sehen die Autoren insbesondere bei der Frage, ob die Motoren auch über eine lange Lebenszeit sauber sind und welche Rolle Defekte oder Manipulationen spielen. Data supplement to: New analogue materials for nonlinear lithosphere rheology, with an application to slab break-off

This dataset provides strain and strain rate data on mixtures of plasticine, silicone oils and iron powder that has been used in slab break-of analogue experiments in the Tectonic Laboratory (TecLab) at Utrecht University (NL) as an analogue for viscously deforming lithosphere. The materials have been analyzed in a creep and recovery test, applying a parallel plate setup using an AR-G2 rheometer (by TA Instruments). The materials can in general be described as viscoelastic materials with a power-law rheology (see previous work on plasticine-silicone polymer mixtures Weijermars [1986], Sokoutis [1987], Boutelier et al. [2008]). For a couple of the tested materials we find a complementary Newtonian behavior at the low end of the tested stress levels, with a transition to power-law behavior at increasing stress. Furthermore, the materials exhibit elastic and anelastic (recoverable) deformation. The corresponding paper (Broerse et al., 2018) describes the rheology, while this supplement describes the raw data and important details of the measurement setup. The raw data concerns mostly (uncorrected) strain and strain rate data. The rheometry has been performed at the Advanced Soft Matter group at the Department of Chemical Engineering, Delft University of Technology, The Netherlands.

Supplement to: Rheological benchmark of silicone oils used for analog modeling of short- and long-term lithospheric deformation

The datasets that are presented here have been obtained to provide a rheological benchmark of silicones used in various analog modeling laboratories. The data contains rheological measurements of several polydimethylsiloxanes (PDMS) and filled silicone oils. The samples of eight different silicone oils originate from seven laboratories. Each sample was analyzed using rotational controlled shear rate tests (CSR), temperature sweep test, and dynamical oscillation tests (amplitude and frequency sweeps). Detailed information on the analysis and interpretation of the data is found in Rudolf, et al. (2016). The data is provided as comma-separated files in *.csv format. Each file contains multiple measurements, each starting with own data series information that is followed by the actual measurement in the form of a table including the individual units of measure. Furthermore the results from ReSpect (Takeh & Shanbhag, 2013) for the discrete Maxwell relaxation spectra are provided. All files can be opened using a text-editor, MS Excel, or equivalent software. More information about the datasets is available in the file Explanations_Rudolf-et-al-2016.pdf, an overview on the available files in the List_of_Files_Rudolf-et-al-2016 (in .pdf and .xlsx format). All information and overview files are also included in Rudolf-et-al-2016_datasets.zip.
