This dataset documents vascular plant diversity recorded on grassland sites in Germany. Vegetation surveys combined (i) a full inventory within one 2 m × 2 m quadrat per 50 m × 5 m sub-transect, where species cover was estimated, and (ii) an additional 30-minute search for further species across the entire 5 m × 200 m transect, recorded as presence only. Cover was assessed using an adapted Braun-Blanquet ordinal scale with predefined percentage ranges; mean cover per species was derived from the midpoint of the assigned range. Because vegetation layers may overlap, summed covers can exceed 100%. Species were identified in the field; records marked "cf." indicate uncertain species-level determination. With a few exceptions, the plant nomenclature follows the German standard list, supporting harmonized taxonomic reporting. The dataset includes sub-transect dimensions, survey method, observation area, scientific names, cover class, associated percentage ranges, derived mean cover, and taxonomic uncertainty flags. Data were collected at multiple restored and reference grassland sites across Northern, Central, and Southern Germany in 2022 and 2023, with site coordinates reported at two-decimal precision (blurred for privacy).
Butterflies were surveyed as part of the Grassworks project, which investigates the restoration of grasslands in Germany. Data was collected from 187 grassland sites across three regions (Northern, Central, and Southern Germany), each with distinct socio-economic and ecological characteristics. Sampling occurred in 2022 or 2023 and included 40–41 restored grassland sites and 20–25 reference sites (10–12 positive, 10–13 negative) per region with site coordinates reported at two-decimal precision (blurred for privacy). Further included are the hydrology and management of all sites and in case of restored grassland sites also the applied restoration method, starting year of restoration and land use history. The dataset provides detailed information on butterfly species, their abundance and observed behavior surveyed on four 5-m wide and 50-m long sub-transects using Pollard walks for 5 minutes each. If a butterfly was nectar sucking, the nectar plant was also recorded. In addition to transect walks, two active catches for 5 minutes each per site were conducted to assess the species richness of the site more completely. Sampling occurred on four monthly observation rounds between May and August, with an additional observation round in April in the Central region. For each observation round, information on the starting date/time, air temperature, wind speed, cloud cover and observer are provided.
To work against the high population pressure and the poverty problems in Egypt, rural areas are opened for new settlements in the Region of Lake Nasser. Due to its high potential for development the government is planning to settle approximately 1, 5 million people in this area within the following 10-15 years. In order to avoid unplanned settlements in the area with a negative impact on natural resources a Comprehensive Development Plan for Aswan and Lake Nasser was developed in 2003 by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) together with the Aswan Governorate.
IUCN Protected Areas Categories System Ia Strict Nature Reserve Category Ia are strictly protected areas set aside to protect biodiversity and also possibly geological/geomorphical features, where human visitation, use and impacts are strictly controlled and limited to ensure protection of the conservation values. Such protected areas can serve as indispensable reference areas for scientific research and monitoring Ib Wilderness Area Category Ib protected areas are usually large unmodified or slightly modified areas, retaining their natural character and influence within permanent or significant human habitation, which are protected and managed so as to preserve their natural condition. II National Park Category II protected areas are large natural or near natural areas set aside to protect large-scale ecological processes, along with the complement of species and ecosystems characteristic of the area, which also provide a foundation for environmentally and culturally compatible, spiritual, scientific, educational, recreational, and visitor opportunities. III Natural Monument or Feature Category III protected areas are set aside to protect a specific natural monument, which can be a landform, sea mount, submarine cavern, geological feature such as a cave or even a living feature such as an ancient grove. They are generally quite small protected areas and often have high visitor value. IV Habitat/Species Management Area Category IV protected areas aim to protect particular species or habitats and management reflects this priority. Many Category IV protected areas will need regular, active interventions to address the requirements of particular species or to maintain habitats, but this is not a requirement of the category. V Protected Landscape/ Seascape A protected area where the interaction of people and nature over time has produced an area of distinct charcter with significant, ecological, biological, cultural and scenic value: and where safeguarding the integrity of this interaction is vital to protecting and sustaining the area and its associated nature conservation and other values. VI Protected area with sustainable use of natural resources Category VI protected areas conserve ecosystems and habitats together with associated cultural values and traditional natural resource management systems. They are generally large, with most of the area in a natural condition, where a proportion is under sustainable natural resource management and where low-level non-industrial use of natural resources compatible with nature conservation is seen as one of the main aims of the area
Lake Sevan, the only large water reservoir within the South Caucasus, is under severe ecological pressure, and understanding the species composition of the lake and especially the rivers of its drainage basin is of central importance to inform natural resource management decisions in Armenia. Due to the limited capacity in the area for exact and fast taxonomic identification of benthic invertebrates, we started to compile a DNA barcode reference database of aquatic arthropods from the Lake Sevan drainage basin, spearheaded by Dr. Marine Dallakyan from Yerevan's Scientific Center of Zoology and Hydroecology (Armenian Academy of Sciences), whose first visit to ZFMK has been financed by DAAD. The project is closely linked to the efforts undertaken and planned within the GGBC(link is external) project. The project results are aimed at making future standardized assessment of aquatic biodiversity monitoring in Armenia and the Caucasus easier, faster, and more reliable.
Folgende Qualifikationsarbeiten sind Bestandteil des Projekts: - Tapping two sources: Farmers conjunctive use of groundwater and surface water in North West China (Bearbeitung: Eefje Aarnoudse) - The land and water nexus in a transition context: the case of Tajikistan (Bearbeitung: Frederike Gehrigk) - Too much but not enough: Issues of water management in Albania (Bearbeitung: Klodjan Rama).
