Trace element contents for the <2 μm, 2-20 μm and bulk fractions from LGM European loess sequences

Trace element contents in microg/g measured on the <2 microns, 2-20 microns size fractions and bulk samples from LGM European loess sequences. Samples were crushed in an agate mortar and trace element concentrations were measured following Chauvel et al. (2011). Reproducibility for trace element analyses is better than 5% based on repeat measurements, and the accuracy is also better than 5%, based on the analyses of international rock standards (JSD-1, JSD-3 and LKSD-1.

Inorganic geochemistry of sedimentary rocks in the catchment of river Thuringian Saale during the last 600 Ma

A literature retrieval was performed for whole rock geochemical analyses of sedimentary, magmatic and metamorphic rocks in the catchment of River Thuringian Saale for the past 600 Ma. Considering availability and coincidence with paleontological an facies data the following indicators seem suitable to detect environmental and climatic changes: biogenic P for Paleoproductivity, STI Index for weathering intensity, Ni/Co-ratio for redox conditions, relative enrichments of Co, Ba and Rb versus crustal values for volcanic activity at varying differentiation. The Mg/Ca-ratio as proxy for salinity is applicable in evaporites. The binary plot Nb/Y versus Zr/TiO2 indicates a presently eroded volcanic level of the Bohemian Massif as catchment area for the Middle Bunter, whereas higly differentiated volcanics provided source material for Neoproterozoic greywackes. A positive Eu-anomaly is limited to the Lower Bunter and implies mafic source rocks perhaps formerly located in the Bohemian Massif.

Untersuchung ueber die Wechselwirkung von Klaerschlaemmen auf unbelastete und belastete Boeden

Die Belastung von Boeden setzt eine Klaerung der geogenen und anthropogenen Herkunft von relevanten Schadstoffen voraus. Exakte Aussagen ueber die Herkunft solcher Schadstoffe lassen sich jedoch stets nur dann machen, wenn auch die lokalen geochemischen Verhaeltnisse bekannt sind und bei den Untersuchungen mit erfasst werden. Dieses ist besonders ausschlaggebend, wenn Klaerschlaemme aufgebracht werden. Hierbei sind die Tonmineralien als Schadstoffadsorber eine Loesung zur Vermeidung der staendig wachsenden Mengen, die insbesondere zur Deponierung oder Verbrennung fuehren. Desweiteren sind bisher nur wenige Untersuchungen ueber die Relevanz von Arsen und Thallium durchgefuehrt worden.

The Role of TNF a/b in Toxicity

Exposure of animals to drugs at high doses or environmental toxins causes often weight loss, hypotension, anemia, acute phase reaction and tissue damage. The administration of recombinant tumor necrosis factor a (TNF alpha, also known as cachectin) in animals causes a similar toxic response pattern. Thus, it is hypothesized that toxicity may be due to the overproduction of endogenous TNF alpha, which functions as the central effector cytokine of a toxic response. The goals of the present investigations are to generate on the one hand mice deficient in TNF alpha and TNF alpha/beta and on the other hand a TNF alpha-lacZ reporter mouse. 1. In order to define the role of TNF alpha in mediating various aspects of general toxicity, mice with a disrupted TNF alpha gene will be generated. Since both TNF alpha and TNF beta are in close proximity on the genome and share some biological features such as common cell surface receptors, we consider the generation of a mouse with a deletion of both TNF genes. Homozygous off springs of both TNF alpha and TNF alpha/beta deleted chimeras should give conclusive information on the role of both gene products for toxicity. 2. In parallel to these delection mutants the generation of a TNF alpha-lacZ reporter mouse would allow for the rapid analysis of cell and tissue specific transcription of TNF alpha in a time dependent way after challenge with toxins. The combination of a fluorogenic beta-galactosidase assay with other cell specific fluorescence markers in cytofluorometry will provide a sophisticated tool to study TNF alpha induction.

Erstellung von 'Environmental Health Criteria' Dokumenten (IPCS/WHO)

Im Rahmen des Internationalen Programms fuer Chemische Sicherheit (IPCS) wird an der Erstellung mehrerer Baende der Schriftenreihe 'Environmental Health Criteria Documents' als 'leading institution' gearbeitet. Unter gemeinsamer Verantwortung wird die Reihe vom 'United Nations Environmental Programme' (UNEP), der 'International Labour Organisation' (ILO) und der 'World Health Organization' (WHO) herausgegeben. Ziel der Kriteriendokumente ist es, vorhandene Informationen ueber eine definierte Chemikalie oder Stoffgruppe zu sammeln, sie zu ueberpruefen und sie zu bewerten. Damit soll eine wissenschaftlich fundierte Grundlage geschaffen werden, die besonders in den Entwicklungslaendern politische Entscheidungen ermoeglicht, um Mensch und Umwelt vor nachteiligen Folgen einer entsprechenden Exposition zu schuetzen.
