Waterbase serves as the EEA’s central database for managing and disseminating data regarding the status and quality of Europe's rivers, lakes, groundwater bodies, transitional, coastal, and marine waters. It also includes information on the quantity of Europe’s water resources and the emissions from point and diffuse sources of pollution into surface waters. Specifically, Waterbase - Biology focuses on biology data from rivers, lakes, transitional and coastal waters collected annually through the Water Information System for Europe (WISE) – State of Environment (SoE) reporting framework. The data are expected to be collected within monitoring programs defined under the Water Framework Directive (WFD) and used in the classification of the ecological status or potential of rivers, lakes, transitional and coastal water bodies. These datasets provide harmonised, quality-assured biological monitoring data reported by EEA member and cooperating countries, as Ecological Quality Ratios (EQRs) from all surface water categories (rivers, lakes, transitional and coastal waters).
The dataset contains information on the European river basin districts, the river basin district sub-units, the surface water bodies and the groundwater bodies delineated for the 1st River Basin Management Plans (RBMP) under the Water Framework Directive (WFD) as well as the European monitoring sites used for the assessment of the status of the abovementioned surface water bodies and groundwater bodies. This data set is available only for internal use of the European Commission and the European Environment Agency. Dieser Datensatz zu den Wasserkörpersteckbriefen stellt standardisiert Informationen zu den Eigenschaften, Belastungen, Zustand, Zielerreichung und Maßnahmen aller deutschen Oberflächen- und Grundwasserkörper des 3. WRRL-Bewirtschaftungsplans (2022-2027) zur Verfügung. Die in den Wasserkörpersteckbriefen dargestellten Inhalte basieren auf den Daten der zuständigen Behörden der Länder in der WasserBLIcK-Datenbank, der Bund-Länder-Informations- und Kommunikationsplattform zur Umsetzung der Wasserrahmenrichtlinie, und stellen ein zusätzliches Angebot zu den Bewirtschaftungsplänen und Länderinformationen dar. Aufgrund von Korrekturen der Ländermeldungen können die Daten in den Steckbriefen und Bewirtschaftungsplänen bzw. Länderinformationen voneinander abweichen.

The dataset provides a set of 8 land ocean masks as NetCDF files based on the maps provided by the datasets ESA CCI Water Bodies - v4.0, Ocean-Map-150m-P13Y-2000-v4.0. The masks come as regular lon/lat grids in 0.1°, 0.25°, 0.5° and 1° spatial resolution, each as a version with and without Greenland and the antarctic regions (anything south of 60° S). The data fields of the individual datasets comprise of a) a field with information on the fraction of land in a grid cell, defined by the number of 150m cells of the source dataset lying within a target grid cell, b) a field with a flag (1 or 0) if a a grid cell contains more than 50% land area or not, and c) a field with a flag (1 or 0) if a grid cell contains any land at all. The dataset was generated in the course of the project "Global Gravity-based Groundwater Product (G3P)" to facilitate data production on a regular grid and to mask out oceans. G3P was funded by the EU Horizon 2020 programme in response to the call LC-SPACE-04-EO-2019-2020 “Copernicus evolution – Research activities in support of cross-cutting applications between Copernicus services” under grant agreement No. 870353.

Nicht zuletzt haben sie einen großen Erholungswert für den Menschen.</p> <p>In Deutschland soll der Gewässertyp des Jahres 2026 den Blick auf die stehenden Kleingewässer richten. Sie sind zahlreich: Mehr als 260.000 gibt es in Deutschland. Es sind kleinflächige, meist stehende und teilweise schwach durchströmte Gewässer. Kleingewässer können dauerhaft Wasser führen oder temporär austrocknen. Zu ihnen zählen Tümpel, Fisch- und Löschteiche, Gruben, Moorgewässer oder kleine Seen. Sie unterscheiden sich hinsichtlich ihrer Bezeichnung, ihrer Größe, ihrer Entstehung und ihrer Nutzung durch den Menschen.</p> <p><strong>Unterschätzte Oasen der Biodiversität</strong></p> <p>Die Rotbauchunke, das Schwimmlebermoos und die Europäische Sumpfschildkröte sind eindrucksvolle Beispiele für die zahlreichen Pflanzen- und Tierarten, die in und an Kleingewässern leben. Weitere Arten sind Urzeitkrebse, Stabwanzen oder der fleischfressende Wasserschlauch. Angesichts der zunehmenden globalen Erwärmung wird es immer dringlicher, kleine Gewässer mit ihren Artengemeinschaften zu schützen.</p> <p>Kleingewässer sind Orte der Erholung, darüber hinaus sorgen sie für lokale Kühlung. Zudem erfüllen sie als Wasser- und Stoffspeicher wichtige Funktionen in der Landschaft und stärken die <a href="https://www.umweltbundesamt.de/service/glossar/resilienz">Resilienz</a> des Landschaftswasserhaushalts. </p> <p><strong><a href="https://www.umweltbundesamt.de/service/glossar/monitoring">Monitoring</a> und gesetzlicher Schutz</strong></p> <p>Gemäß den Anforderungen der EU-<a href="https://www.umweltbundesamt.de/service/glossar/wasserrahmenrichtlinie">Wasserrahmenrichtlinie</a> erfolgt die regelmäßige Überwachung und Zustandsbewertung von Seen durch die zuständigen Behörden erst ab einer Größe von 50 Hektar. Jedoch sind auch kleinere stehende Gewässer als Teile größerer <a href="https://www.umweltbundesamt.de/service/glossar/wasserkoerper">Wasserkörper</a> durch die EU-Wasserrahmenrichtlinie und das Bundesnaturschutzgesetz als Biotope geschützt. Durch die große Anzahl an Kleingewässern ist eine Überwachung und Bewertung ihres Zustands bislang nicht vollständig möglich. </p> <p>Stehende Kleingewässer und angrenzende Flächen werden vielfältig genutzt, beispielsweise für Fischerei und Landwirtschaft. Belastungen entstehen z.B. durch Fischbesatz und Einträge von Nährstoffen und Pflanzenschutzmitteln. Zusätzlich verstärken <a href="https://www.umweltbundesamt.de/service/glossar/klimawandel">Klimawandel</a> und Veränderungen des Wasserhaushalts Probleme wie Austrocknung, Verlandung und damit einhergehend den Artenverlust. </p> <p>Vor diesem Hintergrund ist der vorsorgliche Schutz dieser Lebensräume von überragender Bedeutung. Dazu gehören eine umweltgerechte Nutzung sowie die Pflege und der Erhalt dieser Lebensräume.</p> <p><strong>Der Weltwassertag 2026 - "Where Water Flows, Equality Grows"</strong></p> <p>Der Weltwassertag ist ein seit 1993 stattfindender Aktionstag der Vereinten Nationen, der unter wechselnden Mottos die Bedeutung von Süßwasser in den Mittelpunkt stellt. Er macht auf die 2,1 Milliarden Menschen aufmerksam, die weltweit ohne Zugang zu sauberem Wasser leben.</p> <p>Wasser ist nicht nur die wichtigste Lebensgrundlage sondern auch ein zentrales Gerechtigkeitsthema. Besonders Frauen sind weltweit täglich mit der Wasserversorgung beschäftigt, was ihre Bildung, ihre Arbeitsmöglichkeiten sowie ihre Gesundheit und Sicherheit negativ beeinflusst.
