SeaRanger 2024: Monitoring data recorded during RV ALKOR cruise AL607 - Station data

This data contains monitoring data of the RV ALKOR cruise AL607 conducted in February 2024 (February 10th – February 16th) in the Western Baltic Sea by the University of Hamburg. Sampling activities conducted during this teaching cruise was part of the international sampling efforts to investigate the spawning activity of Western Baltic cod (Gadus morhua) coordinated by the Western Baltic cod Forum (WBCF). The data set includes station data (i.e. action log) of the cruise.

Winter cod 2022: Monitoring data recorded during RV ALKOR cruise AL568b - Gadus morhua stomach content data

This data contains monitoring data of the RV ALKOR cruise AL568b conducted in January 2022 (January 24th – February 1st) in the Western Baltic Sea by the University of Hamburg. The cruise was part of the 5-year monitoring programme Winter cod 2021-25 (Monitoring winter spawning activity of Western Baltic cod (Gadus morhua) (2021-25)) of the University of Hamburg aiming at investigating the early-winter spawning activity of Western Baltic cod to identify potential climate-induced shifts in spawning phenology. The data set contains cod stomach content data. Stomachs of cod were taken during single fish parameter measurements directly on board. Stomachs were immediately frozen on -20°C and subsequently analysed in the laboratory of the University of Hamburg. Cod stomach samples were defrosted and adherent veins were carefully removed from the outer stomach tissue. Adherent water was removed for approximately 5 seconds with paper tissues and stomachs were weighted (accuracy: 0.001 g). Subsequently, stomachs were opened, and the contents and mucus were removed before the empty stomachs weights were recorded. Stomach content weights were derived from the differences between full and empty stomach weights. Prey organisms were identified to species level (mostly fish, and decapods), order level (e.g. for Peracarida), class level (e.g. for Echinodermata, Mollusca), or only to phylum level (e.g. for Annelida). If the digestion of the prey was already progressed too far to allow identification to the levels described above, items were allocated to the categories unidentified fish, unidentified crustaceans or unidentified invertebrates.

Winter cod 2022: Monitoring data recorded during RV ALKOR cruise AL568b - Gadus morhua body and gonad measurements

The data set includes cod single fish analysis data. All single fish measurements were made directly on board. Full wet weights of cod were measured and subsequently cod were gutted and liver weights, gonad weights and sexes, gutted wet weights (i.e., gutted wet mass), gonad stages and liver nematode infestations were recorded, and Otoliths were taken.

Winter cod 2022: CTD data recorded during RV ALKOR cruise AL568b

This data set comprises CTD data of the RV ALKOR cruise AL568b conducted in January 2022 (January 24th – February 1st) in the Western Baltic Sea by the University of Hamburg.

Microplastic abundance in beach sediments of the Kiel Fjord

We assessed the abundance of microplastic (0.2 - 5 mm) in drift line sediments from three sites in Kiel Fjord, Western Baltic. The first site is intensively used by beach visitors, the second is in close proximity to a sewage plant and the third is polluted with large-sized plastic litter. Samples were split into three grain size classes (0.2 – 0.5, 0.5 – 1.0, 1.0 – 5.0 mm), washed with a calciumchloride solution and filtered at 0.2 mm. Filters were then visually inspected and a total of 180 fragments were classified as microplastic, of which 39 % were analysed using Raman spectroscopy. At the site with intense beach use as well as at the site that is close to a sewage plant 1.8 and 4.5 particles (fibers plus fragments) per kg of dry sediment were found, respectively, while particle abundances reached 30.2 per kg of dry sediment at the site with high litter loads. Our data suggest that intensity of human use and proximity to a sewage plant are not necessarily reliable predictors for high loads of microplastics in beach sediments, while the fragmentation of large plastic debris at site seems to be a relevant contamination source.
