Global WaterPack - MODIS - Monthly

The Global WaterPack is a dataset containing information about open surface water cover parameters on a global scale. The water detection is derived from daily, operational MODIS datasets for every year since 2003. The negative effects of polar darkness and cloud coverage are compensated by applying interpolation processing steps. Thereby, a unique global dataset can be provided that is characterized by its high temporal resolution of one day and a spatial resolution of 250 meter. This collection includes monthly composites of the dataset with information on how often a pixel was detected as open surface water with pixel values between 0 and 31. Furthermore, a reliability layer provides information on the quality of each Global WaterPack pixel.

The Global WaterPack is a dataset containing information about open surface water cover parameters on a global scale. The water detection is derived from daily, operational MODIS datasets for every year since 2003. The negative effects of polar darkness and cloud coverage are compensated by applying interpolation processing steps. Thereby, a unique global dataset can be provided that is characterized by its high temporal resolution of one day and a spatial resolution of 250 meter. This collection includes yearly composites of the dataset with information on how often a pixel was detected as open surface water with pixel values between 0 and 365 (366 for leap years). Furthermore, a reliability layer provides information on the quality of each Global WaterPack pixel.

GEMS/Water Open Global Water Quality Dataset

This dataset comprises data from the GEMStat database that are available under an open data license (CC BY 4.0 or equivalent). It is made available on the Zenodo repository. GEMStat provides access to freshwater quality data. The data are voluntarily provided by countries and organizations worldwide within the framework of the GEMS/Water Programme of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). The dataset includes more than 20 Million measurement from over 13,000 stations and covering more than 600 different parameters and spans the time period from 1906 to 2023. This represents over 70% of all GEMStat data, further data is only available under more restricted data licenses. GEMStat is operated by the GEMS/Water programme of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and hosted at the International Centre for Water Resources and Global Change (ICWRGC) and the German Federal Institute of Hydrology (BfG). The data in GEMStat is provided by National Hydrological Services of UN member states.

Major River Basins of the World – GIS Layer

The "Major River Basins of the World" is an ongoing GIS project of the Global Runoff Data Centre (GRDC) that aims at the provision of a set of shape files for the use with Geographic Information Systems (GIS). This dataset was created for the generation of GRDC map products and will be updated from time to time whenever extensions are required by future GRDC projects. At present the dataset comprises the GIS layer of 405 river basins and 687 associated rivers. GRDC data will only be provided for non-commercial uses.
