Climate Change and Environmental Risk Analysis of Turkey

Turkey is characterized by the contrasts between high mountain chains, vast plains, semi-arid lands and fertile lands, and transition between marine and continental climates. Presence of high gradients in characteristics makes the region prone to extremes and relatively rapid climatic changes. There is abundant experimental evidence supporting the assumption that some regions of Turkey will severely be affected by climate change. This research will provide a scientific foundation to understand and assess ecological implications and consequences of climate change on the environmental variables of Turkey using spatial information technologies. Driving ecosystem models at local, regional and global scales using Earth observation data are becoming increasingly common. Remotely sensed-data, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and process-based simulation models have provided the capability to assess ecological change at broad spatio-temporal scales. The major objectives of this research are: to model the current and future spatial distribution of: i) Net Primary Productivity (NPP); ii) Erosion; and iii) Forest fire risk under the climate change scenarios. These outputs will be ...
