Changes in climate, environment and management are altering the worlds ecosystems. Forests are of particular importance in this context due to the significant economic, ecological and cultural services they provide. Projecting changes of these services for the next decades is crucial for a concerted European response to environmental change. There are a number of challenges to meet. Mechanistic forest models that can be extrapolated to new environmental conditions are still associated with considerable predictive uncertainty. The reasons are the lack of harmonized datasets at larger scales and the difficulty to obtain robust methods for parameterisation, evaluation and model comparison that make optimal use of the range of available data types and sources. PROFOUND addresses these problems by: 1) suggesting ways to harmonize and integrate European forest data for model projections 2) comparing forest modelling approaches in terms of scale, processes captured, data requirements and predictive uncertainty 3) developing standards for (Bayesian) model parameterisation, calibration, evaluation and comparison, and 4) facilitating probabilistic multi-model projections under climatic change. As a result, PROFOUND will strengthen the integration of forest modellers and data-providing experts across Europe and provide more reliable information about the uncertainty of model predictions to decision makers.
The data inventory shows that Carpathian research has so far been rather sectoral and pan-Carpathian research is underrepresented. E.g. no climatologic maps and projections are available that focus specifically on the Carpathian region. Little integrated research into the impacts of climate change is currently available. In addition to the pan-Carpathian studies, a set of more focused integrated vulnerability assessments for specific focal areas and selected regional highlights is proposed. The project includes in-depth assessments of vulnerability of water, ecosystems conditions and services and ecosystem - based sectors to climate change impacts and In-depth assessments of the proposed concrete adaptation measures, including their costs and benefits in the Carpathian basin. PIK contributes to service requests on the subjects: (SR1) In depth study on the key climate change threats and impacts on water ressources. and (SR6) Integral vulnerability assessments in focal areas.
ICOS RI is a pan-European Research Infrastructure which provides harmonized and high precision scientific data on carbon cycle and greenhouse gas budget and perturbations. ICOS data is openly available at the Carbon Portal. The Carbon Portal is a one-stop shop for all ICOS data products.
A number of studies indicate that the market demand for wood will lead to strong competition between the different wood industry branches. This is especially true in view of a globalised wood market, in which production is characterised by fast structural changes and concentration processes. Competition between different wood industries and the development towards large production units, as well as an often highly diversified forest owner structure, demands a flexible delivery of varying wood quantities and quality. This leads to high cost, which weakens the position of the European wood industry within a global market. In addition, hazardous environmental events, such as wind throws, forest fires or beetle attacks, have increased during the past years. There is strong evidence that hazardous environmental events will become even more frequent, leading to unforeseeable damage in forests and to excessive felling. Increased competition, natural risks and political and economical disturbances within a global market undermine the concept of a steady and predictable long term development of the forest sector. The challenge is to improve existing processes of the wood supply chain to the needs of wood industry under these changing conditions. In order to meet the market demands of an improved and flexible wood supply chain, novel logistic concepts must provide better information assessment on wood resources and enhance optimisation models. The proposed project would provide a better and faster response to the demands of the different wood industry branches, which will lead to an increase in value recovery.
Despite this importance, there is an alarming decline in the number of students choosing science subjects. Reasons for this include the perceived complexity, the idea that these subjects are uninteresting and tedious, and the lack of effective cognitive tools that enable learners to acquire the expertise in a way that fits its qualitative nature. The DynaLearn project seeks to address these problems by integrating well established, but currently independent technological developments, and utilize the added value that emerges. Specifically, diagrammatic representations will be used for learners to articulate, analyse and communicate ideas, and thereby construct their conceptual knowledge. Ontology mapping will be used to find and match co-learners working on similar ideas to provide individualised and mutually benefiting learning opportunities. Virtual characters will be used to make the interaction engaging and motivating. The development of the workbench will be tuned to fit key topics from environmental science curricula, and evaluated and further improved in the context of existing curricula using case studies. Through this approach, the DynaLearn project will deliver an individualised and engaging cognitive tool for acquiring conceptual knowledge that fits the true nature of this expertise. Conceptual knowledge of system's behaviour is crucial for society to understand and successfully interact with its environment. Acquiring this expertise is therefore a valuable aspect of science education.
