Das Projekt "Schwerpunktprogramm (SPP) 1375: SAMPLE: South Atlantic Margin Processes and Links with onshore Evolution, Subproject: Lithospheric structure of the Namibian continental passive margin at the intersection with the Walvis Ridge from amphibious seismic investigations (LISP-WAL)" wird/wurde gefördert durch: Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft. Es wird/wurde ausgeführt durch: Helmholtz-Zentrum Potsdam Deutsches GeoForschungsZentrum.Passive continental margins offer the unique opportunity to study the processes involved in continental extension and break up and the role of hot-spot related magmatism. We propose combined on- and offshore seismic experiments designed to characterize the Southern African passive margin at the location of the Walvis Ridge (Fig. 1), to assess the interaction of the presumed plume with continental lithosphere and to determine the deep structure of the transition from the coastal fold belt to the stable craton, where the Walvis Ridge hits the African continent. The project integrates three experiments, (A) an onshore, coast-parallel refraction seismic profile, (B) two onshore-offshore wide-angle seismic transects, and (C) a combined on- and offshore seismic imaging of the sub-Moho velocity (Pn tomography) at the ocean-continent transition. The knowledge of the lithospheric structure of the margin together with results from other geoscientific studies (e.g., conducted within the SPPSAMPLE) will help to address fundamental questions such as, how continental crust and plume head interact, what the extent and volumes of magmatic underplating is, and how and which inherited (continental) structures might have been involved and utilized in the break up process. With this proposal we apply for funds to conduct the onshore/offshore part of this amphibious experiment, consumables and travel costs for part of the offshore experiment, and the personnel to analyse the amphibian data sets.
Das Projekt "Schwerpunktprogramm (SPP) 1375: SAMPLE: South Atlantic Margin Processes and Links with onshore Evolution, Subproject: Tectonic evolution of the South Atlantic passive continental margin based on onshore structural data" wird/wurde gefördert durch: Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft. Es wird/wurde ausgeführt durch: Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz, Institut für Geowissenschaften. This work will deal with the opening of the South Atlantic and the tectonic development of its margins with special emphasis on the Parána LIP's (Large Igneous Province) in Brazil and the Etendeka LIP's in Namibia. We will study the effects of deep-seated mantle processes, far-field plate stresses and local margin dynamics on the passive margin. Our first hypothesis is that the margins on both sides of the South Atlantic experienced a very different development following LIP extrusion, since hot-spot activities on both margins vary and the Brazilian margin is influenced by the Andean orogeny (being currently under compression in an E-W direction). Our second hypothesis states that the passive continental margin is segmented onshore along the large Florianopolis/Rio Grande Fracture Zone and associated faults and experiences different block movements through time. The second hypothesis is based on new thermochronologic data assembled in the first SAMPLE phase, which shows margin segmentation. Our third hypothesis is that reactivation of basement faults plays an important role in the margin dynamics. The Parána and Etendeka LIP'S and their contact to the basement rocks are an ideal archive of the post-rift development of the margin. Detailed field-work on reactivation of basement faults will be followed by a fault slip analysis in order to determine local paleo-stress states (directions of principal stresses and relative ratios of differential stresses). We will use a new powerful method (SVS-method, Sippel et al. 2009) that allows us to separate different stress states and test them thoroughly. Finally we will try to fit the determined stress states in time frames using relative fault intersections, fault dyke relations where we will date important volcanics and thermochronological data from the accompanying project. We aim to produce a new tectonicthermochronologic model of the dynamics of the South Atlantic margins, their differences and segmentation. Our work tackles important SAMPLE questions, will be compared and adjusted to offshore studies and builds an ideal basis for large-scale numerical models.

The goal of EINS is coordinating and integrating European research aimed at achieving a deeper multidisciplinary understanding of the development of the Internet as a societal and technological artefact, whose evolution is increasingly interwined with that of human societies. Its main objective is to allow an open and productive dialogue between all the disciplines which study Internet systems under any technological or humanistic perspective, and which in turn are being transformed by the continuous advances in Internet functionalities and applications. EINS will bring together research institutions focusing on network engineering, computation, complexity, security, trust, mathematics, physics, sociology, game theory, economics, political sciences, humanities, law, energy, transport, artistic expression, and any other relevant social and life sciences. This multidisciplinary bridging of the different disciplines may also be seen as the starting point for a new Internet Science, the theoretical and empirical foundation for an holistic understanding of the complex techno-social interactions related to the Internet. It is supposed to inform the future technological, social, political choices concerning Internet technologies, infrastructures and policies made by the various public and private stakeholders, for example as for the far-ended possible consequences of architectural choices on social, economic, environmental or political aspects, and ultimately on quality of life at large. The individual contributing disciplines will themselves benefit from a more holistic understanding of the Internet principles and in particular of the 'network effect'. The unprecedented connectivity offered by the Internet plays a role often underappreciated in most of them; whereas the Internet provides both an operational development platform and a concrete empirical and experimental model. These multi- and inter-disciplinary investigations will improve the design of elements of Future Internet, enhance the understanding of its evolving and emerging implications at societal level, and possibly identify universal principles for understanding the Internet-based world that will be fed back to the participating disciplines. EINS will:-Coordinate the investigation, from a multi-disciplinary perspective, of specific topics at the intersection between humanistic and technological sciences, such as privacy & identity, reputation, virtual communities, security & resilience, network neutrality-Lay the foundations for an Internet Science, based i.a. on Network Science and Web Science, aiming at understanding the impact of the 'network effect' on human societies & organisations, as for technological, economic, social & environmental aspects-Provide concrete incentives for academic institutions and individual researchers to conduct studies across multiple disciplines, in the form of online journals, conferences, workshops, PhD courses, schools, contests, and open calls.
Das Projekt "Annual- to decadal-scale quantitative climate reconstructions from varved Alpine lake sediments for the last 3300 years / ENLARGE II" wird/wurde gefördert durch: Schweizerischer Nationalfonds zur Förderung der Wissenschaftlichen Forschung. Es wird/wurde ausgeführt durch: Universität Bern, Geographisches Institut.Current climate change research is fundamentally challenged by three questions: (i) the characteristics of natural climate variability, (ii) the discrimination of anthropogenic forcing, and (iii) ecological, societal and economic risks when natural variability and anthropogenic forcing are superposed in a future climate. Insight into the regional (here Alpine) expression of climate change and changes of variability is critically important for two reasons: (1) regional trends (e.g. in the Alps), amplitudes and statistics of extremes strongly exceed values reported for the global scale, and (2) latest modelling results (IPCC AR4) suggest that Europe is globally the hotspot for a future increase in the inter-annual variability (e.g., summer temperatures), which will be the greatest challenge. This project will examine varved (annually laminated) lake sediments and provide seasonally to annually resolved quantitative time series for temperature and precipitation for the eastern and north-western Swiss Alps (Engadine, Berner Oberland) back to ca 3300 years. Varved lake sediments are unique paleoclimatic archives and most suitable for very long records since they preserve the low-frequency (>10^2 yrs) climate signal. More specifically, this project will extend the record of interannual quantitative autum SON temperature reconstructions (biogenic silica flux, r=0.70), summer precipitation reconstructions (mica/chlorite ratios, r=0.59) and autum precipitation (mica/plagioclase ratios, r=0.68) in Lake Silvaplana back from 1580 AD to 1300 BC. The applicability of the methods will be tested for Lake Seeberg and Lake Oeschinen in the limestone province and the climate regime of the northwester Swiss Alps. These time series will provide insight into (i) the structure and absolute amplitudes of decadal-century scale climate variability, (ii) quantified multi-decadal climate trends and rates of change, (iii) the hypothesis of greater interannual climate variability during warm periods of the past (e.g. Iron/Roman Age, Medieval ), as it is suggested for Central Europe in the future ('global hotspot of variability'). This project develops in the core theme of IGBP and WCRP PAGES / CLIVAR Intersection. Our data are made available to the NOAA WDC data base for Paleoclimatology.
