In the first phase of the consultation GZB will be the technical partner of a workgroup which is going to establish a government-guideline for the implementation of geothermal energy projects in Chile. The guideline will emphasize legal, financial and environmental aspects.

Das Projekt "GRK 1598: INTERCOAST - Integrierte Küsten- und Schelfmeerforschung" wird/wurde gefördert durch: Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft. Es wird/wurde ausgeführt durch: Universität Bremen, Zentrum für marine Umweltwissenschaften.Die Küsten- und Schelfmeerregionen unserer Erde unterliegen einem ständigen globalen Wandel. Die zunehmende wirtschaftliche Nutzung dieser Regionen in Verbindung mit Veränderungen der natürlichen Umwelt, beispielsweise dem globalen Meeresspiegelanstieg, stellt unsere Gesellschaft vor neue Herausforderungen. Dies bedarf neuer Strategien zur nachhaltigen Nutzung und Entwicklung der Küsten- und Schelfmeerregionen. Entsprechende Planungen erfordern eine interdisziplinäre und internationale Zusammenarbeit in den verschiedensten betroffenen Wissenschaftsfeldern, um die Veränderungen in der natürlichen Umwelt und in der Gesellschaft der Küstenregionen zu analysieren, zu verstehen, vorherzusagen und - wenn nötig ­- abzumildern. Das deutsch-neuseeländische Graduiertenkolleg wird zu dieser Aufgabe beitragen, indem es junge Graduierte zu fachlich qualifizierten, selbstständig und interdisziplinär denkenden sowie in die internationale Forschung eingebundenen Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftlern ausbildet. Neben Schwerpunkten aus den Naturwissenschaften sollen auch assoziierte Fragestellungen aus dem Bereich der Sozial- und Rechtswissenschaften bearbeitet werden. Neben dem fachspezifischen Wissen werden diesen jungen Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftlern zusätzliche Fachkenntnisse und Erfahrungen im Projektmanagement zur weiteren Berufsqualifikation vermittelt. Im internationalen Graduiertenkolleg arbeiten 13 junge Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler an verschiedensten Themen aus dem Bereich der Meereswissenschaften an der Universität Bremen. Diese Doktorandinnen und Doktoranden werden aber auch ca. ein Drittel ihrer dreijährigen Promotionszeit an der Universität Waikato in Neuseeland verbringen. Dies ermöglicht es ihnen, mit einigen der besten Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler auf ihrem Arbeitsgebiet zu arbeiten, zu lernen und zu publizieren. Im Austausch werden die neuseeländischen Doktorandinnen und Doktoranden für ca. ein Jahr an der Universität Bremen forschen. Ziel des Graduiertenkollegs ist es, eine neue Generation international ausgerichteter junger Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler auszubilden, die über ihre eigene Disziplin hinausblickend für die Herausforderungen der Zukunft und den Arbeitsmarkt vorbereitet sind.

Aktualisierte EMAS-Umwelterklärung des Umweltbundesamtes 2012

Die hiermit vorgelegte aktualisierte Umwelterklärung 2012 fasst die wichtigsten Änderungen im Umweltmanagement des ⁠UBA⁠ seit der Veröffentlichung der validierten ⁠EMAS⁠-Umwelterklärung 2011 zusammen und enthält die Umweltkennzahlen für das Jahr 2011. Damit erfüllen wir die Anforderung nach Artikel 6 (2) b) sowie des Anhangs IV der EMAS-Verordnung.

FP6-SUSTDEV, Desertification Mitigation and Remediation of Land (DESIRE): a global approach for local solutions

Das Projekt "FP6-SUSTDEV, Desertification Mitigation and Remediation of Land (DESIRE): a global approach for local solutions" wird/wurde gefördert durch: Kommission der Europäischen Gemeinschaften Brüssel. Es wird/wurde ausgeführt durch: Universität Bern, Geographisches Institut, Centre for Development and Environment.Fragile arid and semi-arid ecosystems are in urgent need of integrated conservation approaches that can contribute significantly to prevent and reduce the widespread on-going land degradation and desertification processes, such as erosion, flooding, overgrazing, drought, and salinization. The DESIRE project will establish promising alternative land use and management conservation strategies based on a close participation of scientists with stakeholder groups in the degradation and desertification hotspots around the world. This integrative participatory approach ensures both the acceptability and feasibility of conservation techniques, and a sound scientific basis for the effectiveness at various scales. DESIRE employs a bottom up approach such as is favoured by the UNCCD: i) degradation and desertification hotspots and stakeholder groups will be identified in all countries surrounding the Mediterranean, and in 6 external nations facing similar environmental problems, ii) desertification indicator sets will be defined in a participatory approach and a harmonized information system will be constructed to organize socio-economic and geoinformation data and tools for active dissemination; iii) new and existing conservation strategies will be defined with the stakeholder communities; iv) these strategies will be implemented in the field, and monitored and modeled to quantify their effectiveness at various scales; v) the results will be extrapolated using both the indicator sets, geoinformation data, and integrated modeling systems combining socio-economic and environmental aspects; vi) finally the results will be translated to a series of practical guidelines for good agricultural practices and environmental management, which will be disseminated to practitioners, agricultural extensionists, governmental authorities, policy makers, NGOs, land users, land owners, and local communities. Es wird/wurde ausgeführt durch: RWTH Aachen University, Fachgruppe für Geowissenschaften und Geographie, Geographisches Institut, Lehrstuhl für Physische Geographie und Geoökologie.The project is part of the SPP1372 (Tibetan Plateau: Formation - Climate- Ecosystems. The objective of this proposed project bundle is the reconstruction of Quaternary climate and landscape evolution of the Northern Tibetan Plateau. The project aims to contribute multidisciplinary approaches on three selected lake catchment archives along sediment routings (sediment cascades) in order to better understand the interrelation between various land forming processes within well defined catchments. These processes are closely related to climatic conditions in the area. By reconstructing the processes we will be able to give detailed information about the climate development of the area. Important process parameters are related to the amount and temporal-spatial variations of precipitation which are directly linked to changes in the monsoonal air masses. Our research bundle focuses on the northern transect. The selected key-sites comprise the Donggi-Cona system, the Lake Ayakhum system and a nameless lake in the western Kunlun Mts. of quite different climate influence but with similar catchment characteristics (fully developed sediment cascades from the glaciers to the lakes). We will provide the first systematic chronostratigraphy of manifold aspects of environmental change on the north-eastern Tibetan Plateau, combining different types of terrestrial and lake records. Moreover, we will be able to synthesise land forming processes and their responses to climate forcing. Spatial GIS-based modelling of the landscape and climate evolution will help us to link local findings with regional and global signals.

Es wird/wurde ausgeführt durch: Universität Freiburg, Waldbau-Institut.In many situations, forest management concepts arrived at for small farmers in the Amazon have been defined externally and do not adequately correspond with their livelihood systems and competences. This is one of the reasons why only few farmers effectively use the potential of the wide variety of forest management options available to enhance their well being. The project aim is to identify locally viable forest management options contributing to local livelihoods and the ecological stabilisation of landscapes, and to define possibilities to promote them as a basis for sustainable development in the rural areas of the Amazon. The project also seeks to strengthen the capacity for collaborative research and networking amongst local and international project partners. The project will identify and analyse existing local forest management initiatives in the Bolivian, Brazilian, Ecuadorian and Peruvian Amazon, where farmers have decided to manage and not clear forests for other land-use purposes. Following the 'Integrated Natural Resource Management approach, the project will analyse institutional, environmental and technical aspects of the livelihoods of small farmers, to assess and value the local viability of selected forest management systems and their possible contribution to the ecological stability of the different regions. Through the application of both 'Action Research and traditional research approaches, the project will ensure local relevance and stimulate constructive learning processes. A sound background to the decisions made by small farmers to invest in forests is provided through the analysis of a formal and informal institutional framework, such as political, economic, legislative and infra-structural key drivers. Complementary to this, an analysis of livelihoods and environmental aspects will be carried out. This is perceived as a basis for the development of key indicators for sustainable forest management by small farmers in the Amazon.

Das Projekt "Workshop über 'Klimawandel und Umweltaspekte im Verkehr'" wird/wurde gefördert durch: Bundesministerium für Umwelt, Naturschutz und Reaktorsicherheit (BMU), Umweltbundesamt (UBA). Es wird/wurde ausgeführt durch: Universität Karlsruhe (TH), Institut für Wirtschaftspolitik und Wirtschaftsforschung.Das Vorhaben enthält die Organisation und Durchführung sowie das Verfassen eines Berichts über den Workshop 'Climate Change and Environmental Issues in Tansportation'. Der Workshop findet am 24. Mai in Brüssel statt. Zunächst soll der Diskussionsrand und die Problematik des Themas beleuchtet werden, anschließend kommen Vertreter der einzelnen Verkehrsträger zu Wort. Die hochrangigen internationalen Redner kommen aus Wissenschaft, Politik und Wirtschaft. Zielgruppe des internationalen Workshops sind Parlamentarier, Mitglieder von umwelt-/bzw. Verkehrsministerien sowie Vertreter von Nichtregierungsorganisationen.

Es wird/wurde ausgeführt durch: Universität Freiburg, Institut für Umweltsozialwissenschaften und Geographie, Professur für Physische Geographie.In the South-Indian city of Chennai (formerly called Madras), disastrous tropical monsoon linked with excessive precipitation frequently lead to wide-flat floods in the coastal plains. Caused by rapid urbanisation, the population in urban and periurban areas is more and more affected by these events. Besides the marginalised population living in disfavoured areas, increasingly also the more wealthy population that settles in flood prone areas is affected. Interdisciplinary assessments are needed to explain the complex causes of floods. The project analysed environmental aspects of risk exposure as well as socioeconomic aspects of risk perceptions and response strategies. By combining natural-scientific with socio-scientific approaches, a holistic perspective of the complex reasons and impacts of flooding could be covered. The project consisted of the following steps: 1. Analysis of flood risk exposure: Physio-geographic, hydrological and meteorological realities in risk areas were assessed using remote sensing (RS) data and geographical information systems (GIS). 2. Analysis of risk perception and management: Affected marginalised poor segments of the population, affected middle class groups as well as local planning authorities were interviewed to analyse local perceptions of floods and dominant management strategies. 3. Development of a flood risk map: The results of the risk assessment were integrated in an interactive flood risk map. The map - using several different layers - functions as a flood risk management tool including often neglected socioeconomic and socio-cultural parameters which reflect local vulnerability. 4. Holding of two workshops: A policy workshop with different stakeholders involved in flood management and affected by floods was held in Chennai in August 2007. This workshop was to foster communication and dialogue between different stakeholders and to create awareness on the current situation and problems in the area. A roundtable with the partners from India and organisations dealing with flood management and flood relief measures took place in October 2007 in Freiburg in order to present and discuss the findings and to strengthen future co-operation, communication and networks.

FP6-POLICIES, Comparison and Assessment of Funding Schemes for the Development of New Activities and Investments in Environmental Technologies (FUNDETEC)

Es wird/wurde ausgeführt durch: IZT - Institut für Zukunftsstudien und Technologiebewertung gemeinnütziger GmbH.The project examines funding of environmental technology development and commercialisation. The objectives are to: measure the performance of existing funding schemes (emphasising commercial-type funding); determine how environmental aspects are dealt with; identify obstacles; and suggest evolution of new schemes. Eight project work packages address these objectives, and also include development of environmental technology typologies, analysis of funding gaps, and comparison to Japan and the USA. The project supports SSP 5A by connecting policy and practice, linking researchers from across the EU, and using wide consultation to disseminate knowledge and maximise exploitation of research results. Consortium partners are drawn from five EU states, and have expertise and networks in private and public environmental technology funding and technology development processes. Stakeholder consultation with private and public funders, developers, academics, policy makers and NGOs will support research and knowledge dissemination. Consultation will include major public conferences and forums, sector-specific focus groups, and workshops to test analysis and geographic variations. Consultation and publication and dissemination of the final report will spur innovation by private and public funders, supporting knowledge exploitation after project completion. Research will emphasise private sector solutions, but will also include public-private partnerships, which are innovative measures that can assist in closing the funding gap. The varying applicability of such partnerships across different EU states will also be considered. The two project deliverables will be a database containing research and contact information, and a widely published final report that will integrate all research and recommendations.
