Biogenic formation of non-extractable residues from pesticides in soil

During microbial turnover of organic chemicals in soil, non-extractable residues (NER) are formed frequently. Studies on NER formation usually performed with radioisotope labelled tracer compounds are limited to localisation and quantitative analyses but their chemical composition is left unknown. Recently, we could show for 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid and ibuprofen that during microbial turnover in soil nearly all NER were derived from microbial biomass, since degrading bacteria use the pollutant carbon for their biomass synthesis. Their cell debris is subsequently stabilised within soil organic matter (SOM) forming biogenic NER (bioNER). It is still unknown whether bioNER are also formed during biodegradation of other, structurally different compound classes of organic contaminants. Therefore, agricultural soil will be incubated with labelled compounds of five classes of commonly used and emerging pesticides: organophosphate, phenylurea, triazinone, benzothiadiazine and aryloxyphenoxypropionic acid. The fate of the label will be monitored in both living and non-living SOM pools and the formation of bioNER will be quantified for each compound over extended periods of time. In addition, soil samples from long-term lysimeter studies with 14C-labelled pesticide residues (e.g. triazine, benzothiazole and phenoxypropionic acid group) will be also analysed for bioNER formation. The results will be summarised to identify the metabolic conditions of microorganisms needed for bioNER formation and to develop an extended concept of risk assessment including bioNER formation in soils.

Leistungsoptimierte Lithium-lonen Batterien

Multiple-site seismic hazard assessment

The classical point wise Cornell-McGuire probabilistic seismic hazard assessment (PSHA), which is widely used for seismic hazard mapping and development of design codes, does not allow direct estimation of multiple-location hazard for distributed structures and facilities: what is the (annual) probability that specific level of ground motion will be exceeded simultaneously in several sites? It is possible to extent the classical methodology to the multiple sites problem considering also ground-motion correlation. We study multiple-location PSHA, as compared with the classical point wise PSHA, using Monte Carlo simulation. Specific items are:(1) Development of the algorithms for multiple-location PSHA;(2) Analysis of the role of the geometry of multiple sites, correlation of ground motion, and evel of seimicity for multiple-location PSHA;(3) Study of correspondence and differences between multiple-location PSHA and classical point wise PSHA and analysis of possibility of utilization of classical PSHA procedures for simplified multiple-location hazard assessment. The project is innovative because only few attempts have been made so far regarding our research questions.

ERA-NET - Development of test methods for non wood small-scale combustion plants

Non wood fuels for small-scale furnaces have attracted increasing interest in several European countries. New technological approaches are on the way, but the verification of any such developments is difficult and there is a large uncertainty about testing procedures and equipment. While for wood combustion standardized European measuring regulations are available and broadly applied, the testing of cereal fuel combustion is generally not following a commonly accepted procedure. Consequently the results of such measurements are not fully comparable. This applies particularly for the international level, which is here of particular relevance due to the fact that a combustion technology development for a niche application can only be economically viable if a sufficiently large marketing area can be taken into focus. The overall objective of the proposal is therefore to contribute through research to the development of uniform and comparable European procedures for testing of small-scale boilers up to a power out of 300 kW for solid biomass from agriculture like straw pellets and energy grain. The driving forces and barriers will be worked out; existing legal regulation for the installation (approval by the local authorities) in the participating countries will be collected. The state of the art of the non wood biomass boiler technology will be identified; the need for standardized tests for type approval tests and the measures to establish a European Standard will be shown. Measurement methods with special emphasis on efficiency and emissions will be worked out and the requirements and specifications of test fuels will be proposed. Test runs will be carried out following preliminary test procedures based on existing European standards for wood boilers. Based on the results of these test runs a draft for a Europe-wide uniform test procedure will be proposed. Preparatory work for a European standardization process including a round robin test will be done.

EVOLution of TREEs as drivers of terrestrial biodiversity

Evoltree will associate four major disciplines - genomics, genetics, ecology and evolution - for understanding, monitoring and predicting genetic diversity, ecosystems structures, dynamics and processes. This strategy will be applied to three major interacting elements of terrestrial ecosystems: trees, phytophagous insects and mycorrhizal fungi. The functional role of trees as drivers of biodiversity will be deciphered by investigating their adaptive diversity, their structuring role on diversity of associated species and their own evolutionary rate in response to biotic and abiotic environmental changes. The network will integrate multidisciplinary research to dissect the structure, expression and polymorphism of genes of ecological significance, and contribute to the emergence of 'ecosystem genomics'. The genomic activities will be conducted within a 'Laboratory without walls' where high throughput techniques will be integrated and then applied to a wide range of tree and associated species, starting with model species. Evoltree will setup the necessary experimental infrastructures, information systems and bioinformatics resources for common use by the partners. Large data sets will be compiled and made accessible by developing data mining procedures for the analysis of geographic and temporal distribution of genetic diversity. Evoltree will spread its knowledge and expertise for the purpose of education, biodiversity monitoring, and conservation. The network will develop training capacities and facilitate mobility opportunities throughout Europe. A dynamic communication strategy will disseminate its results to the scientific community, end users and the public. Evoltree will greatly contribute to the national and international efforts for preserving biodiversity, in particular, the resolutions initiated by the Pan-European Biological and Landscape Diversity Strategy initiative adopted by the Ministerial Conference on Protection of Forests in Europe.
