'eseis' - a comprehensive R software toolbox for environmental seismology

Environmental seismoloy is a scientific field that studies the seismic signals, emitted by Earth surface processes. This R package eseis provides all relevant functions to read/write seismic data files, prepare, analyse and visualise seismic data, and generate reports of the processing history. eseis contains a growing set of function to handle the complete workflow of environmental seismology, i.e., the scientific field that studies the seismic signals that are emitted by Earth surface processes. The package supports reading the two most common seismic data formats, general functions for preparational and analytical signal processing aswell as specified functions for handling signals generated by Earth surface processes. Finally, graphical plot functions are provided, too.The software package contains 51 functions and two example data sets (eseis-supplementary_material.zip). It makes use of a series of dependency packages described in the DESCRIPTION file of the package.

European Approach to GEOSS (EUROGEOSS)

Objective: EuroGEOSS demonstrates the added value to the scientific community and society of making existing systems and applications interoperable and used within the GEOSS and INSPIRE frameworks. The project will build an initial operating capacity for a European Environment Earth Observation System in the three strategic areas of Drought, Forestry and Biodiversity. It will then undertakes the research necessary to develop this further into and advanced operating capacity that provides access not just to data but also to analytical models made understandable and useable by scientists from different disciplinary domains. This concept of inter-disciplinary interoperability requires research in advanced modelling from multi-scale heterogeneous data sources, expressing models as workflows of geo-processing components reusable by other communities, and ability to use natural language to interface with the models. The extension of INSPIRE and GEOSS components with concepts emerging in the Web 2.0 communities in respect to user interactions and resource discovery, also supports the wider engagement of the scientific community with GEOSS as a powerful means to improve the scientific understanding of the complex mechanisms driving the changes that affect our planet.

Supercaps fuer Traktionsanwendungen sind auf dem Weltmarkt nicht erhaeltlich. Eine wesentliche Ursache dafuer ist das Fehlen geeigneter, leistungsfaehiger und langzeitstabiler Elektroden-, Matrix- und Dichtungsmaterialien. Im Rahmen dieses Vorhabens sollen entsprechende Werkstoffe entwickelt und unter KFZ-relevanten Bedingungen erprobt werden. Die hohe Leistungsdichte elektrochemischer Kondensatoren (Supercaps) verspricht Systemvorteile beim Lastausgleich und der Energierueckgewinnung beim Bremsen, zumal zukuenftige Batterien mit ausreichender Energiedichte fuer die Elektrotraktion nur eine begrenzte Leistungsdichte erwarten lassen.
