Geochemical microanalysis of continental alkaline rocks from the Ramon Volcanics, Negev Highlands, Israel

This study examines the petrogenetic processes behind magmatism in the Levant Magmatic Province (LMP), an early Cretaceous, intra-continental volcanic region with no clear association with extension or asthenospheric upwelling. Focusing on the erosional cirque of Makhtesh Ramon, a region with exceptional petrological and geochemical diversity, we sampled the local basaltic sequence and integrated olivine-hosted melt inclusion microanalyses with whole-rock and glass geochemistry. Our results highlight the role of small-degree mantle melting, lower crustal magma storage, and a heterogeneous mantle source modified by carbonate-rich fluids, offering new insights into the origins of alkaline magmatism in the region.
